American Courage, American Whiners

The Atlantic has run several photo series of World War II. The full range of photos and identifying captions from which the following selections were clipped can be found at: http://www.theatlantic.com/infocus/2011/09/world-war-ii-the-pacific-islands/100155/?google_editors_picks=true

This is a silent tribute to American strength, courage and honor. I don't see the same thing in the US Congress where the well-being of the nation too often takes a back seat to political posturing. The privileged legislators who work there do not grasp that their jobs are as important as that of a private with a 50 pound pack slogging up the beach under a rain of metal. They need to suck it up and do what is right for America. Not whine for votes.

  1. So the US Congress needs to do "what's right" for America, and never mind their feeble minded constituents? Yes, Mister Government just knows what's best for us misguided peasants.

  2. I don't think constituents are feeble minded, but I doubt that many understand the complexities of the Fed or how swaps work. Or what it takes to produce an F-16. Or how many drones are out there. Few read the bills that are drafted. Elected representatives should consult with constituents, get advice from experts (not spin artists), and do what is good for the country. Just as Greece must take hard decisions that the electorate disagrees with. Furthermore the language coming from both Democrats and Republicans is unduly partisan. Leave campaigning to the campaign tour and do the professional work when in the office.

  3. I have no pity for Greece, just like like I have no pity for Detroit and California. People get the government they deserve.
