Charmaine Clamor

It is good to step back from the words and the analyses and the tensions and joys of the reach for understanding to simply experience a Philippines that is beyond words. Sometimes we catch it in a photograph. Sometimes in a smile. Sometimes in a song.

Thanks to Attila for introducing Charmaine Clamor, and Cha for sending over her delightful video about "My Funny Brown Pinay".

Today, the song . . .

  1. 1. Ah, so we have transitioned from discussing the problems of the land to enjoying its sound. It’s a welcome break. “Music has charms to soothe the savage breast”, wrote William Congreve.

    2. And Charmaine can soothe the savage breast, the savage mind and more. Pity about the sound and recording quality. (The Vimeo version is marginally better quality than YouTube.)

2.1 One test I employ to judge music is to close my eyes and see whether I am carried away. Of course, I tend to fall asleep, but then that’s part of the charm.

    3. Filipinos love music enough to kill for. I recall my amusement and incredulity about a Pinoy being killed for butchering “My Way”. I suppose he did pose the challenge: “It’s either my way -- or you can kill me.” A fitting punishment for the offender would be to listen to the recorded voice of his victim for the length of his sentence. No finer torture could ever be devised.

    4. I have a collection of CDs that I intended to luxuriate in in my retirement. I haven’t started. YouTube is too convenient. I wonder what adaptations evolution will produce on computer man. Atrophied musculature. Tarsier eyes. Elephant ears.

    1. One thing I cannot stand at Filipino parties is Karaoke singing. When they whip out their My Way I scurry away before the shooting starts.

In civilied countries, they ring a bell if they are out of tune. In the Philippines they shoot you.

    2. That Filipino guitarist blows me away !!! When the guitar came on I wasn't watching. I tought it was Earl Klugh or Pat Metheny. IT WAS A PINOY !!! 100% unadulterated un-retouched Filipino!!! I betcha he is also living in New Yok face like that can never sell songs in the Philippines.

  2. OMG!!! This is the traditional Filipina looker I'm talkin' 'bout. Brown skin. Bulbous nose. Thick lips. Truly Filipino. If she did not immigrate to America she wouldn't have made it singing in front of the bus instead of at the back.

This is the face of a Filipino. Not drop-dead gorgeous Kris Aquino although I still love her smiley innocent look.

So I did a test in my office. I sent e-mails to my white officemates and have them vote which one is a Filipino and which is not. Kris got a resounding "not Filipino" vote, whereas, Charmaine got the "yes Filipino" hands down.

Charmaine should do fulltime singing. That voice is rich and full that complemented her aborigine-lips. I'm lovin' it. I AM PROUD FILIPINO.

Another icon that truly resembles a Filipino is Manny Pacquiao. Now, that is what I call a unadulterated 100% pure Filipino macho-look with body of kargador veins bursting out of his arms. Of course, Manny is married to a hand-crafted sculptured face of Jinkie with Clorox-bleached skin.

Pilita Corales from Cebu is a national singing icon of Filipino folk music. Truly a Filipino face. Corales' should be listened to at the porch of a nipa hut the middle of ricefield to capture the essence of her music.

  3. Here few of the many Filipino songs that I like.

Ang Pinay. It is OFW Anthem. The lyrics is spot on. Listen to it.
Yakapin Mo Ako by Joey Albert. Beautiful tune.
Sana'y Wala ng Wakas-Sharon Cuneta (My wife's favorite, soundtrack of the same movie title)
Of course, Carenderia Blues by Juan de la Cruz. This one is very rare not even available in Youtube
Himig Natin Juan de la Cruz.

    1. Mariano, thanks. Haven't listened to all yet but Joey Albert is supreme nostalgia.

  4. "Drop-dead gorgeous Kris Aquino"

She is not my cup of tee. Her look doesn't impress me and that is true for most of the mixed meztica and Chinese mixed actresses in the Philippines.
Charmanie Clamor is my winner in the look dept. Hey at least I'm not competing for the same type of women with Filipino men. Sometimes I tell my Filipino friends to come to Hungary or Europe and date white chicks. I know Filipino gays who regularly go to Europe and date white guys. Those gays are usually more in to arts and well educated.
To my taste the gwapa "Brown skin, Bulbous nose, Thick lips" Filipinas are the real exiting beauty.

    1. Indeed. I suppose it all depends on whether you find comfort in conventional sameness or enticing exotic in differentness. I'm into exotic myself. I think the white lady look is brought to us by advertisers, not men.

  5. Pilita Corales? My wife introduced me to her and I like her pure voice and deep heartfelt singing. However I think you have to be a Filipino in order to fully appreciate her. I'm more in to the universal language of Jazz and Classical music that has a strong ethnic influence. If it is Harana than it has to have purity and classical quality. I particularly like Filipino classical guitar by Angelo Favis, Florante Aguilar and Michael Dadap.

    1. Attila, I hereby confer on you a certificate of Class C Philippine citizenship. The certificate entitles you to all the rights and privileges - and hardships - of Pinoy-ship. May you enjoy the rides on a karatela, jitney, and banca; celebrate a town fiesta and pig out on litson, kare-kare, pancit; rock on Aguilar music in an intimate Ermita pubhouse. Congratulations.

PS. My kudos extend to your impressive lady. For a spouse of one land to acculturate a spouse of another land to his/her native culture to such a degree is amazing. It says we can come together inspite of - or because of - our diversity.

    2. Yes I'm a Class C citizen. Thanks for your kind words.

  6. My all time favorite filipino song, Sa Ugoy ng Duyan, speaks of a child's longing and yearning to find comfort and love once again in her mother's arms, in the songs her mother used to sing to her as a young child. Every year, on my mother's death aniiversary, my siblings and I listen to this song.

This year, my brother chose for us this beautiful rendition by Lea Salonga : (Lyrics translation for Joe, Attila and Josephivo below)

    Rockabye Lullaby

Translation of “Sa Ugoy ng Duyan” by Lucio San Pedro and Levi Celerio (from the blog The Marocharim Experiment)

I hope memories don’t fade of days that have come and gone
When I was a small child, who’s cared for by my Mom
I hope that I can hear the songs from my Mother’s heart
Those heartfelt lullabies, from a cradle going rockabye

I hope memories don’t fade of days that have come and gone
When I was a small child, who’s cared for by my Mom
I hope that I can hear the songs from my Mother’s heart
Those heartfelt lullabies, from a cradle going rockabye

And in my deep slumber, ’till daylight that I sleep
My guards, the stars in the night, my safety they do keep
And when I’m with my Mama, the heavens are my life
A pain in my heart longing for cradles and rockabyes

I hope memories don’t fade of days that have come and gone
When I was a small child, who’s cared for by my Mom
I hope that I can hear the songs from my Mother’s heart
Those heartfelt lullabies, from a cradle going rockabye

And in my deep slumber, ’till daylight that I sleep
My guards, the stars in the night, my safety they do keep
And when I’m with my Mama, the heavens are my life
A pain in my heart longing for cradles and rockabyes

Oh once again I want to sleep, in my old cradle
    Oh, mother…

    1. ANG PINAY ... by Florante.

      Dapat ka bang mangibang bayan?
      Dito bay wala kang paglagyan?
      Sa bahay man silay mahuhusay.
      Sa bahay man silay mahuhusay.
Kung minsan ay selosa rin ang pinay
pagkat ang selos ay tanda lang ng pagmamahal ng pinay

    2. I know this one, Mariano. And a couple of other songs written by Florante. He is one songwriter who couldn't stop singing about his country! He also penned Ako'y isang Pinoy, Abakada, and Handog.

  7. Cheer up everyone! Easter Sunday came early! The Phil just made investment grade from Fitch!

Joe, Billy Esposo is in serious medical condition.

Also, the CBCP has withdrawn from PPCRV (but for a different reason than the one I was campaigning for (partisanship) . Or could it be a face-save?) Source: CBCP website link to Malaya article

    1. I wish the best for Billy Esposo.

Great news on the Fitch rating. Interesting developments on the PPCRV, as well.

      Thanks for the update, Andrew.

    2. Investments are for foreigners only. They are protected by the Philippine government from scams and shenanigans of Philippine corporation.

Minimum-wage working-class commoner like me better be wary. Local aborigine brown-skin are not protected.

I just wonder what information Abercrombie&Fitch based their data on WHEN IT IS NOT EVEN AVAILABLE TO THE LOCALS THRU THE BRILLIANT PHILIPPINE MEDIA.

    3. POEA slave trading statistics are late by one year...
Top ten Philippine imports and exports are only available thru CIA websites. These stats are only projections not actual stats
The population is another projection from tarot card readers available only in CIA websites.
Newspaper circulation is still at dismal 750.0K. Readership at 1.0M for projected population of 94.0M
No condo residency stats. Condos in Makati are mostly uninhabited. One of them is my brother's.
      No office occupancy rates available.

I JUST SO WONDER Abercrombie&Fitch data from? They gotta have data. A&F are run by Americans. Americans rely on solid data. But it is not available. Where did they get it from?

    4. A&F must have factored in Scarborough Fair and Spratleys and Sabah that benign0 Aquino not claiming it anymore considering the silence from Malacanang.

Was the noise made on China by Aquino so he'd have reason to buy armed-less harmless military toys for his PMA Generals? Who get to ride in them? These are expensive transports. Definitely absolutely these are useless toys. It must have been intended not against Chinese but against Filipino rebellions to subjugate the Filipinos. We will never know.
